While a slave remains in his fetters, the land must have no rest. Writing to James N. Brown, Lincoln discounted this belief although seven years later, he would embrace this hope in the last speech of his life. If other men choose to go upon all fours, I choose to stand erect, as God designed every man to stand. In four of them I have expressly disclaimed all intention to bring about social and political equality between the white and black races, and, in all the rest, I have done the same thing by clear implication.
