But as Haller prepares for the case that could launch him into the big time, he learns that Vincent's killer may be coming for him next. The Burning Room looks like it will mark the end of his LAPD career, and although it is - as ever - a perfectly competent police procedural novel, it is not a gripping thriller. There's little inflection or emotion in the reading and it frankly puts you to sleep and makes you lose track of the story.The Marketing Dept's at Amazon, Audible and Hachette Audio really made a mess of this book. What would have made The Burning Room better? I get why people have written negative reviews of the narration because it's a little less animated than your typical audiobook narrator. It is available in CD and in downloadable formats. Haller is convinced Jessup is guilty, and he takes the case on the condition that he gets to choose his investigator, LAPD Detective Harry Bosch.
Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box", the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together. The reason is that two unrelated investigations are taking place simultaneously and they both seem like they would struggle to stand alone.

There were a couple of others I caught but can't remember them now.
I discovered this series when audible had a sale on the 4th audio book in the series. The one good thing in Bosch's life, the person he holds most dear, is taken from him and Bosch travels to Hong Kong in an all-or-nothing bid to regain what he's lost.

A couple of old story lines were mentioned however not as they happened in the books. I do like Welliver as Bosch on TV, but his narration here can be one-note. Cancel anytime.
I was skeptical going in, but the narration was great.
As soon as Bosch begins retracing Dr. Kent's steps, contradictions emerge. Why wasn't this narrated by the usual people. It's sad that a great read is ruined by the one reading it.

Now and then Harry thinks of his own diminishing future with the LAPD, or mentions to other characters that he has only a year remaining in his DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Plan) contract with Los Angeles' police department, after which he will have to leave for good.
