It is interesting to me that Winslow has used totally different geographical settings for each story( the 3rd being the Great Basin region in Nevada). So far it is excellent and I do not expect any disappointment. Robert Pendleton is a chemical genius with a fertilizer worth a fortune to whoever controls the formula. The first part was more lively and enjoyable to me. A very detailed book, with an interesting and satisfying conclusion, but at a more pedestrian pace. I was bummed because this is the second book in a 5 book series and I was really excited about the first one when I read it. He is sort of the anti-hero hero. Carey is sort of an amateur detective who sort of works for the "friends" department of a stuffy New England bank. Synopsis: Book two of the Neal Carey mystery series: PI Neal Carey is back on the hunt—this time on a chase across the back alleys and backwoods of China in pursuit of a missing scientist and his beautiful mistress.
This story is one that you just can't guess what will happen next.
Winslow does a good job of taking a simple story and building it into a larger framework. He has gone on to write on a number of diverse subjects (Californian fires, surfing, etc and then there's the Neal Carey series. Along the way I learned a lot about Chinese history from WWII to the 1970's. Welcome back. After thoroughly enjoying the first Neal Carey book, I quickly moved on to the next. I have become quite fond of Neal Carey and find myself laughing and being thoroughly entertained. I stumbled upon the first book in this series completely by chance, and I was hooked. It was great to catch up with Neal Carey--the literary detective who we last left heart broken and barely breathing after a shotgun blast to the chest.

I still enjoyed the main characters, but found the supporting characters less interesting than the previous book. You come to really like this guy.
Trail of the Buddhas Mirror I think is the best of the series - there are dark and brutal components, and twists that leave the reader bewildered - but the relationship between Carey and his 'father' is perplexing.
It is very different from the first and I can see why certain reviewers found the China detail tedious,but I just treated it as a learning experience about a history that I know little about.
